Spiked Very Berry Kala Khata
Spiked Very Berry Kala Khata

This drink is a sure shot must have in this deliciously sassy place. It  takes the goodness of sweet, juicy mulberries, concocts it with grape juice and some vodka, with a dash of kala khatta syrup and black salt to add some punch. Move on to know more about my bellydriven adventures here…

As I was holidaying in Goa, my social media handles screamed reviews of a new player in the culinary circuit of Pune. It was none other than ‘The Sassy Spoon’ and that is when it went straight into my go to list. So, the moment I was back, the next evening I made my way to check out the sassiness at the Sassyspoon. It was a Tuesday evening I was expecting only a few diners there but contrary to my belief..the place was full for a weeknight and so abuzz that will make you check your calendar again. Then again as I ventured inside to check out the place the first thing that came to my mind is the place is so happy, bright and colorful – A perfect place for a cozy dinner or a lunching hangout for the girl gang.

The ambiance here radiates sass with its stylish interiors, completed with warm and wooden furniture around. To top up the outdoor experience, along with great music there is also an setting that brings to mind an old European charm

As I made myself comfortable in their outside patio like seating, I was handed over the menu. The drinks menu that accompanied the food menu was equally as impressive, with non-alcoholic coolers, iced teas, and smoothies alongside martinis, margaritas, cocktails and wines. I settled for the for the Morning Brew – a lovely concoction of espresso, vanilla, whiskey, house-infused orange liquor and zest. Well the boozy brew will jolt you out of sleep and the perfect coffee cocktail offers a tasty treat for taste buds. A sure shot #MustTry here.

Then came along the food…

First up, was the Srilankan Spiced Chicken Poi that had a stuffing of minced chicken in between Goan poi – that is a flat hollow bread. If you are in Goa you will see its quite a staple paired with omlette. So here we had a perfect amagamation of the two cuisines Srilankan and Goan. A sure appetizing start to the meal

Then came along the star of my meal –  The Tenderloin Jerky with coriander seeds and lemon, spicy cherry tomato and chili dip. Crisp and not too chewy, packed with the Kerala flavors, this one hits all the right notes for a meat lover. This one leaves you wanting more! #BellydrivenRecommends #HighlyRecommended

The nachos here were the regular fare with queso, tomato salsa and chimichurri but again the Otak Otak – Malaysian spiced fish and shrimp grilled in banana leaves will make you wonder how do you make such a subtle preparation that hits the right taste notes. The mild flavors of galangal and lemongrass with a hint of kaffir lime and the fish just melts in your mouth. Kudos to the chef here.

Up next were brioche stuffed with creamy mushroom fricassee. A cheese lover’s delight, these mini brioche buns came with individually filled buns and a melting cheese and mushroom middle. A passable appetizer.

I read about people going gaga over the Cajun spiced butter garlic prawns that come along with the crusty baguette. Rightly so, the genuineness of the Cajun seasoning rings true and immerses into the neutral flavor of the bread in a rich, buttery teaser of what lies ahead. Chopped pieces of garlic predominantly mark the flavor of this dish and serve to stimulate the appetite. The butter content in the dish may sure intimidate you, give it a try anyway

In the mains we ordered The Spaghetti with lemon beurre noisette parmesan and roasted almonds. It’s no mistake that the French give browned butter its due by calling it beurre noisette, paired brilliantly with spaghetti and topped with parmesan cheese and roasted almonds for the crunch. A spectacular dish to savor.

The baked lasagna was another #MustTry for the vegetarians – creamed leeks, mushrooms, sweet potato and cheddar cheese make is this a power packed main.

The pan seared chicken in a mustard cream sauce with bacon, shallots and garlic spinach did not impress me much. Chicken was a tad undercooked and I failed to find the body in the sauce way to runny for me.

The French Onion Cheese Melt is a sandwich with cheddar and Caramelized Onion as fillings will impress you if you are a cheese fan.

I personally ordered the Thengal Arai with appams for my main course. This dish consists of prawns cooked in a tangy and flavorsome coconut and tomato paste. The sauce was well  tempered with typical red chilli, mustard seeds and curry leaves. It is not too high on chilli quotient and blended well with the freshly made appams. The appams by themselves were were crunchy on the edge and soft inside. The appams tasted a little too sweet by themselves, but beautiful when the curry soaked into them. #HighlyRecommended

I ended up trying some desserts from their sister brand – The Sassy Teaspoon. The teaspoon has quite an array of desserts to choose from. From macaroons to brownies and mousse to tarts along with breads they have it here. I chose the Belgian chocolate pastry, the orange chocolate entremet while my counterparts settled with Chocolate Mousse , Red Velvet pastry and Red velvet cupcake. My favorite of the day was the Belgian Dark Chocolate Pastry.

The service is impeccable, staff are well-trained and knowledgeable of each beverage and drink, more so than the average restaurant.

The relevant question here is will I be coming back here? Although the meal here has peaks, but it has valleys too, as do the price points. Yes I will come back but on a lazy afternoon, the blogger me needs more light for better pictures and I am going to bring out my girl gang here for sure for some sassy conversations at The Sassy Spoon.

Cheers!!
